1. What’s the difference between proofreading and light editing?

Proofreading:

  • Performed on the final draft of the project
  • Eliminates misspellings, grammatical and punctuation errors, inconsistencies, formatting errors, etc.
  • Consistent spelling, either American or British English
  • Does not include word count reduction
  • Cheaper than editing
  • Shorter turnaround time

Light Editing:

Same as above (except for turnaround time)

  • Performed on the first draft and continues until complete
  • Plot and pacing review
  • Comments and suggestions about content, such as plot problems, weak dialogue, etc.
  • Check for continuity errors
  • Includes word reduction, if required

2. How long will it take for you to proofread/edit my project?

You can request a preferred return date and as long as it gives me a reasonable amount of time to complete it, that date will be accepted. Since I am a freelancer and may be working on more than one project at a time, I will let you know if the turnaround time you desire is not feasible. If you don’t have a preference on when it’s returned to  you, I’ll give you an expected date.

3. What will I receive from you?

I will return to you two documents:

  • one with all the changes shown in the body of the text, along with comments and suggestions in the margins (if line edited)
  • one clean copy with changes incorporated (which you will obviously review)
  • you’ll have unlimited access to me before, during, and even after the editing process

4. What files do you accept?

I edit/proofread Microsoft Word (.doc and .docx) files, using the track changes function. I can also edit in Google Drive documents.

5. What references do you use?

I use:

  • The Chicago Manual of Style
  • Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, 11th edition
  • New Oxford Style Manual
  • Oxford Dictionaries

6. What if I send you my book (blog, screenplay, etc.) and it’s not ready like I thought it was?

If you send me your project for me to proofread and I realize it needs more than that (editing), I will contact you to discuss it.

7. What forms of payment do you accept?

I prefer Paypal since it’s quick and easy, but also accept checks, money orders, and cash (if you’re local). Invoices will be provided for all projects. Projects of $250 USD or more will require 50% deposit and the remainder on completion.

8. Will my total price change?

I will give you a total price up front. I will do this by asking for a sample of your project, and to see exactly what needs to be done and how long it will take.
